The EU has received the 2012 award for advancing the causes of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. In its announcement on 12 October, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said its decision was based on the stabilising role the EU has played in transforming most of Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.
Four Europeans aged 8-24 have a chance to win a trip to Oslo to participate in the Nobel Prize ceremony, in a competition launched this week by the European Union. The four winners will be part of the official EU delegation, together with the presidents of the EP, the European Council and the Commission. They will take part in all official parts of the Nobel Peace prize ceremony.
