The EU multiannual plan for managing Baltic Sea cod, sprat and herring stocks was approved in plenary on Thursday. This is the first new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) regional plan that takes account of interactions between species. It aims to ensure the sustainability of fisheries and offer fishermen better economic conditions in the long run. Parliament and Council negotiators reached an informal agreement on it in March.
Eight years after they were awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament, the Cuban Ladies in White (Damas de Blanco) have finally come to Brussels to collect their award. Damas de Blanco was formed in early 2004 in Cuba as a spontaneous movement of wives and female relatives of jailed dissidents. They are not a political party or bound to a political organisation of any type.
