Save the Schengen area!

Rules regulating the temporary control of Member States' borders will be voted on by the Plenary on Thursday. The EPP Group will vote in favour of solid rules based on a strong European oversight and guarantees. We will vote against the short-sighted and unrealistic proposals of Left-wing political groups which would, as a consequence, dismantle the whole system and the functioning of the Schengen area. Further limiting the right of the Member States to control their borders will kill the Schengen area.

The EPP Group welcomes the EU's clear commitment to bring these countries into the Union but underlines that this must be done according to merit and the results of reforms, judged on strict criteria.
